2022 STOLPMAN LA CUADRILLA BALLARD CANYON RED
2022 STOLPMAN "LA CUADRILLA" BALLARD CANYON RED, SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA. 60% Syrah, 5% Sangiovese, 30% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre
From the Winemaker: "2021 Cuadrilla opens up with dark ripe plum highlighted with bright fresh red berries. Deep and supple with fine chalky tannins already married with a smooth, polished texture. An alluring otherness of wet stones, mint, and mocha prevail from the nose through the mouth captivating the senses beyond just the magnificently pleasurable profile."
"La Cuadrilla" is a wine named after the "cuadra", a vineyard block set aside at Stolpman for the vineyard workers to train and learn. Stolman Vineyard Manager Ruben Solrozano developed this plan for engaging workers beyond day labor so they could build a career for themselves in the wine business. It is a blend of Syrah, Sangiovese and Grenache, 80% de-stemmed, 10% whole-cluster fermented and aged in 100% neutral French oak. Plum, blueberry and spice leap from the glass, followed by a juicy, flavorful palate with fine tannins and lip-smacking finish. A fun, food-friendly red for year-round entertaining. Each vintage, the production from the "cuadra" was bottled and given to the crew workers. Starting with the 2009 vintage, Stolpman expanded production of Cuadrilla, and profits of sales are shared by the crew.
About: Tom and Marilyn Stolpman began planting vines in Ballard Canyon in 1992 and today have 120 acres under vine. Located 15 miles from the Pacific, Ballard Canyon enjoys a unique weather pattern of wind, fog, and maritime influence, making it slightly warmer than cool climate Sta. Rita Hills, but cooler than further inland in the Valley. This, combined with south-facing hillsides rich in limestone soils create optimum conditions for Stolpman to cultivate a wide range of varietals and styles, from classic Rhone varieties like Syrah and Roussanne to Italian varietals (Sangiovese) and more obscure French grapes (Trousseau). When son Pete took the reigns in 2009, he shifted from selling most of their fruit to producing under the Stolpman name. Stolpman has “Grape whisperer” Ruben Solorzano has been the vineyard manager since 1994. Stolpman employs its vineyard workers year-round and profits from their “La Cuadrilla” wine project go to providing further stability to these working families.
