Eastern and Western Hills of Spain: Premier Club (April 2022)
Featured Premier Club Wines:
2020 COTO DE GOMARIZ | "THE FLOWER & THE BEE" TREIXADURA | RIBEIRO, GALICIA, SPAIN
91 points Vinous: "Bright, green-hued yellow. Racy, mineral-accented citrus and orchard fruit aromas pick up chalky mineral and ginger nuances with air. Taut and focused on the palate, offering fresh lemon, green apple and melon flavors and a hint of fennel. The mineral note drives a long, detailed finish that leaves a citrus pith note and a subtle touch of honey behind."
Coto de Gomariz is located in the DO of Ribeiro in the Avia River Valley in Galicia. In the late 1980s and 1990s the movement that changed the face of Ribeiro wines from rustic vino sold locally to wines of international acclaim was led by Viña Meín, whose production today enjoys a devoted following along with the cult wines of neighbor Emilio Rojo. The old-vine vineyards that Viña Meín rehabilitated were located in the town of Gomariz and San Clodio, both of which held some of the oldest vines and best terroirs of mostly granitic soils with some schist, sand and clay.

2019 MAS MARTINET | "BRU" | CATALUNYA, PRIORAT, SPAIN
From the winemakers: 30% Syrah, 28% Carignan/Mazuelo, 19% Grenache, 16% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. "We mix the whole grapes and stems in vats. Co-fermentation of Grenache-Syrah-Merlot, and Carignan-Syrah-Cabernet."
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Forward and elegant wine, lovely fresh nose of integrated black fruits and oak, overlaid with minerals and hints of spices in a warm deliciously smooth, fresh, friendly wine, marked tannins and licorice notes on its long lingering finish."
Martinet Bru is mainly sourced from a single vineyard, known as Mas Seró. This vineyard is located within the “Vi de Vila” (village wines) zone of Masos de Falset. It adjoins the D.O. Montsant (wine appellation) and has a similar climate to Montsant, although the differentiating factor is the soil, which is Llicorella (slate-based). The soil is stony but the vineyard is cool in terms of climate. It faces the cooling sea breeze (known as the “Garbinada”) and the quality of the soil means this wine is more drinkable and easier to understand than most Priorat wines, affording it hint of liquorice, blackberries… rosemary… and tannins.
In 1981, Mas Martinet, a life project and a dream come true, was born. The brand is fruit of the passion of Josep Lluís Pérez and Montse Ovejero for knowledge, for the method. It means transfer, generational replacement, continuity, persistence, back and forth process. The whole family involved in the project, along with a great team , turn Mas Martinet into a sustainable, humane and drinkable project.
