A Tale of Two Pinots, Wines of Monterey County: Premier Club (Feb 2022)
Featured Premier Club Wines:
2018 WRATH WINES | "SWAN/828" PINOT NOIR | MONTEREY COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Quite dark in the glass, this clonal blend packs intense boysenberry, damson plum and dark strawberry atoms, with vanilla pie crust, light violet and tea on the nose. It’s lush and thick on the palate, with flavors of blackberry, nutmeg and French toast, proving ripe and hedonistic."
Winemaker's Notes: "This clone blend combines dark cherry, raspberries and the scent of earthiness on the nose. The palate offers a balance of structure and acidity that compliments elegant, focused red berry and cherry cola with a hint of forest floor. Nimble and pure, it terminates with a long and clean finish enhanced with a touch of mineral."
"Wrath produces site-driven Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc from our estate vineyard and respected properties in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Our production is small, our distribution is limited and our wines reveal attitude, passion, and an inherent respect for what a vineyard can give us."
2020 MY PRETTY WINE CO. | PINOT BLANC | MONTEREY COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
Chris Miller, a native of New Orleans, and Jared Heber, from Washington State, became fast friends while working the floor as sommeliers at the iconic Canlis restaurant in Seattle. Chris went on to manage the wine program at Wolfgang Puck's legendary Spago restaurant in L.A. while Jared added the storied French Laundry to his résumé. Along the way, Chris found the time not just to work harvest under the tutelage of the acclaimed Greg Brewer at Brewer-Clifton in the St. Rita Hills, but also to become a Master Sommelier.
The My Pretty Pinot wines started as a buddy project with Chris and Jared. There are a few underappreciated grape varieties that Chris likes to work with, Pinot Blanc being one of them. They always joked about the term "Unicorn Wine" and so the label is a play on that; narwhals being "Unicorns of the Sea". Chris started winemaking with Gramercy Cellars and did side projects with Brewer-Clifton. Then took over his winery/cellar, which had previously been owned by a Monterey native, a few years ago full-time. Chris is pretty technical as a winemaker, and really does focus on organically farmed viticulture. He is also pretty no-nonsense, and when asked what the story is with making wine the answers are usually "because I wanted to make it" and "because it's delicious." (Distributor)
