Farm Cottage Wines, established by Ryan Alfaro in the Santa Cruz Mountains, produces wines that reflect a commitment to minimal intervention and site expression. The 2023 Syrah from the Ryan Spencer Vineyard is a testament to this philosophy. Grown on steep slopes between 450 and 800 feet in elevation, the vineyard's sandy loam soils contribute to the wine's distinctive character. The Syrah is fermented 100% whole cluster in open-top stainless steel tanks, with natural fermentation initiated by a pied de cuve. Gravity rack and returns are performed twice daily, with fermentation lasting 14 days before pressing. The wine is aged in neutral French oak barrels for 11 months, allowing the fruit and terroir to shine without overpowering oak influence. This Syrah presents a vibrant profile, with aromas of white pepper and dark fruit leading to a palate of blue and light red fruits.
