2020 KINGS CAREY "CLOS MULLET VINEYARD" SANTA BARBARA COUNTY CABERNET FRANC
2020 KINGS CAREY "CLOS MULLET VINEYARD" SANTA BARBARA COUNTY CABERNET FRANC, CALIFORNIA. 100% Cabernet Franc.
On the nose: Black pepper, cranberries, forest floor. Palate: Black pepper, tea leaves, black olives, currants. (Winery)
From the Winemaker: "The vineyard: Organically-farmed, minimal stewardship. Clos Mullet Vineyard lies within the town of Los Alamos, CA, Santa Barbara County AVA. The vineyard is owned and farmed by our friend, mentor, and winemaking colleague, Michael Roth.
The label (and here’s where things get serious): Another one of Hawk Krall’s original designs, the label for Kings Carey’s first foray into Cab Franc was initially inspired by the famous Merry-Go-Round in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park. The grand, old carousel – rumored to have been Walt Disney’s inspiration for creating Disneyland – is seen at the center of this label, surrounded by other pier amusements and carnival attractions inked by Hawk, who also has sentimental ties to both carousel horses and carny culture.
But wait, there’s more: The Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round’s ridership – the very lifeblood of this magnificent piece of history – has dwindled, due in part to the attraction’s COVID pause. The “MGR” re-opened with weekend hours this past summer, and those horses are calling your name. Please, if you are in the Los Angeles area and can find time to slip away from your everyday pursuits, check out the MGR. Rides are only about $2.00 per ticket, and the proceeds go to keeping this absolute gem maintained. So close, we can hear the Stinson 165 Military Band Organ. Enjoy the ride." (Winery)
About James Sparks, winemaker: "You should trust an ex-Mormon winemaker. Here’s why…
James started life as a Mormon. In 2009, having already left the religion, James’ brother-in-law brought him to California’s Santa Ynez Valley; a move which would kick-start his career path in Santa Barbara Wine Country.
Originally assistant winemaker for Santa Barbara County label, Dragonette Cellars, James left Dragonette to join Liquid Farm as the boutique label’s very first, dedicated winemaker. James transitioned over to Liquid Farm at the start of harvest 2013, and continues to make Liquid Farm’s variety of wines (now five Chardonnays, a Rosé of Mourvèdre, and four Pinot Noirs) in addition to Kings Carey Wines.
James’ work ethic and attention to detail, including his {annoying} fastidiousness and penchant for cleanliness in the winery, allow his wines to speak for themselves…simply put, they undergo fewer manipulations which are often due to necessary fixes or corrections in the winemaking process."
