2016 LULU "SOUS LE CERISIER" CHARDONNAY COTES DU JURA, SAVOIE-JURA, FRANCE. 100% Chardonnay. (Organic/no added sulfur)

The Jura is a small, mountainous winegrowing region located between Burgundy and Switzerland in the far east of France. The region is fairly isolated and has retained a strong sense of tradition, marked by unique grapes and unusual wine styles. This comes from 30-55 year-old vines planted to lias marl soils. Made in the traditional method, it exhibits a vibrant mix of lemony fruit and minerals with nutty undertones and savory qualities. Elegant, complex and with layers of depth.

About: The owners of Les Chais du Vieus Bourg (which translates to “the cellars of the old town”), Ludwig Bindernagel and Nathalie Eigenschenck, purchased the Domaine in 2000. Their first vintage came shortly after in 2002. Ludwig works with the vines every day. Their vineyards are organic and they do not use any insecticides, chemical fertilizers or machinery; they are also in the process of gaining Biodynamic certification. The soil is very unique, with two marly layers and a calcareous stratus, which is rich in fossilized oysters. The vines are among some very old stocks and are not genetically modified. The strict attention to detail and quality helps create very complex wines that reflect the individuality of Jura.

Previously known as Les Chais du Vieux Bourg, Lulu Vigneron is introducing a new look for their wines. They have completed their conversion to 100% organic viticulture and believe the occasion deserves a modern, simplified name and label. Ludwig Bindernagel is known to his friends and colleagues as Lulu, so this affectionate nickname was the natural choice for the winery. All production and wines remain at the same high quality for which Bindernagel is known. The original vineyard is about 2.5 hectares in Arlay, in the center of the Jura, and Ludwig has since expanded the estate to include vineyards at Poligny and Etoile and the legendary Château-Chalon. Their motto of “the wine is made in the vineyard” is exemplified by the fact Ludwig works with the vines every day. Ludwig has a completely natural approach to wine making with a dedication to a non-interventionism and an affinity for making wine in a traditional style. He only takes the best clusters during selections, and uses extensive pruning techniques by hand to avoid packing down the soil with heavy machinery.
