2016 ERIC KENT "1 KM WEST" SONOMA COAST CHARDONNAY
92 points Wine Spectator: "Taut and complex, featuring a trim, focused core of apple, pear and citrus flavors, ending clean and snappy, with a dash of honeydew melon." (JL, 07/2018)
With this Sonoma Coast wine, Eric Kent's approach uses very little new oak - just enough to support all the naturally occurring goodness. From the get-go, the serous deep green/gold color in the glass indicates that it's not messing around. Loads of citrus oil, citrus peel and baked quince on the nose fold directly into the same impressions on the lemon curd-saturated palate. Just on the fuller side of medium bodied, mouthwatering acidity leaves the wine to the finish with a satisfying tensile snap. Much like the Green Acres Hill Chardonnay, this wine's rich-yet-crisp, yin/yang nature is reminiscent of old world favorites.
About: Self-described "wine geek" Kent Humphrey began making wine on his own the early 2000s and officially launched his own winery, Eric Kent, after apprenticing with mentors Bruce Devlin (Ballentine Vineyards, Three Clicks Wines), Bill Hunter (Chasseur), and Mike Officer and Jay Maddox (Carlisle). Since the begining, his wines have distinguished themselves for their easy-drinking charm and by bearing local artists' work on their labels. Together with his wife, Colleen, and his sister Renee (for whom this wine is named) they continue to evolve as a winemaking team with an ever-expanding loyal following and increasingly refined wines.
