2019 CHANNING DAUGHTERS "RAMATO" LONG ISLAND PINOT GRIGIO (ORANGE WINE)

2019 CHANNING DAUGHTERS "RAMATO" LONG ISLAND PINOT GRIGIO, NEW YORK. (Certified Sustainable) 99% PINOT GRIGIO, 1% MUSCAT OTTONEL (Orange)

From the winery: Our foremost commitment at Channing Daughters Winery is the care of our grapevines and the quality of wine in the bottle. Our priorities are deliciousness and reflection of our place! Starting with intense and careful culture of our vines to the hand-picking of ALL grapes, gentle whole cluster-pressing of white fruit, stomping by foot with punch-down by hand of red grapes, and gravity bottling, our methods remain traditional and artisanal. Wine is grown by hand at Channing Daughters. We are proud of every single bottle and are excited about your interest in our wines.

We are interested in continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible in our vineyards, our cellar and our region. Currently we are producing about fourteen thousand cases of wine a year spread across nearly three dozen different bottling’s. We strongly believe there are different foods, occasions, people, seasons and moods that demand different flavors, smells, textures and styles of wine. To this end we create single vineyard varietal wines and blended wines, wines made with indigenous, wild yeast as well as selected yeast, and occasionally a blend of both. Some wines are filtered and fined, some are not. Stainless steel tanks and barrels as well as French, Slovenian, American and Hungarian oak barrels are used in various sizes, formats, percentages and ages. We will co-ferment white and red fruit. We enjoy fermenting some white wines on their skins. We seek deliciousness. We do everything by hand in small batches with lots of love and attention in order to fulfill our commitment to quality wine in the bottle.

About the wine: Ramato is a special skin-fermented white wine, or what many are now calling "orange" wines. Ramato refers to the old Friulian-style of fermenting Pinot Grigio on its skins, thus creating a coppery-colored wine. All the Pinot Grigio fruit (from both our home farm in Bridgehampton and the Mudd West Vineyard on the North Fork) for our Ramato was hand-picked, handled minimally, fermented on its skins (with wild /ambient yeast) in small bins (for fifteen days) and raised in older French and Slovenian oak for eight months. Not only is the wine alluring and delicious to smell and taste but our Ramato possesses an absolutely gorgeous color to admire...somewhere between deep electric orange and copper. There are aromas and flavors of honey, brown spices, dried apricots, pear skin, tropical citrus, baked apples, coriander, caramel and peaches. The wine has balanced acidity, only 12% alcohol, medium-plus body and great persistence of flavor on the finish. This dry, exotic, textured and aromatic wine falls somewhere between a white and a red but does not fit neatly into the pink category. Pair our Ramato with hard cheeses, charcuterie, fish, chicken and pork preparations that include spices, nuts, grains or squash. Exotic, lightly spiced and earthy foods will work marvelously with this wine. Our 2019 Ramato will also be a great addition to the table year-round with its cornucopia of savory and sweet aromas juxtaposed by dryness and complex texture. This is an exceedingly delicious and exciting wine that yearns to be seen, smelled and tasted. Drink this wine now at cellar temp in large glasses and over the next six plus years. 288 cases were produced. (Winery)
