2015 FOXEN "ERNESTO WICKENDEN VINEYARD" SANTA MARIA VALLEY CHENIN BLANC

2015 FOXEN "ERNESTO WICKENDEN VINEYARD" SANTA MARIA VALLEY CHENIN BLANC, CALIFORNIA. 100% Chenin Blanc.

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Pluot flesh, wet cement, crushed chalk and Asian pear show on the nose of this bottling that boasts aromas promising a crisp and textural experience. The palate does not disappoint, with clean, refreshing flavors of lemon rind and grapefruit pith, with a grippy mouthfeel."

90 points Vinous Media: " The 2015 Chenin Blanc Ernesto Wickenden Vineyard is rich, lush and forward, with quite a bit of old-vine intensity that gives the wine its shape and volume. Powerful and exquisitely beautiful as it opens up in the glass, the 2015 has a lot to say. The Ernest Wickenden Chenin remains one of the most distinctive whites being made in California today. Readers should expect an especially phenolic, savory style." A much beloved wine to those in the know, Foxen's Chenin Blanc comes from a single vineyard in Santa Maria Valley. This three-acre Chenin Blanc site is a small terrace of Elder sandy loam above Tepusquet Creek, which divides the East and West Tepusquet Bench. Because of its lower elevation, Ernesto Wickenden vineyard is protected from the afternoon coastal winds, so it gets a bit more heat summation, ideal for Chenin to ripen to perfection while preserving natural acidity. It was picked by hand, whole-cluster pressed and vinified in a combination of stainless steel, French oak puncheons and Acacia barrels followed by aging for seven month in neutral French oak.

About: Bill Wathen and Dick Doré have been making wine together since 1985, when they founded Foxen Winery & Vineyard at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in Northern Santa Barbara County. Since that time their dedication has remained the same: the creation of small production, sustainably-farmed, vineyard-focused wines using a straightforward and minimalist approach to winemaking. The winery is named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, and English sea captain and Dick’s great-great grandfather. Benjamin Foxen came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800’s and purchased the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in 1837 with a Mexican Land Grant that totaled nearly 9000 acres, that comprised most of what is now known as Foxen Canyon. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive anchor as his ranch cattle brand, which became the trademark of the Foxen Vineyard & Winery. They are proud that they have made our home on the now 2000-acre Rancho Tinaquaic, which remains in family hands. 2014 marks the 30th harvest for the Foxen Boys.
