2024 MASSICAN NAPA VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC

2024 MASSICAN NAPA VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC. CALIFORNIA. 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

You may recognize Dan Petroski as the award-winning winemaker behind Larkmead Vineyards, one of Napa Valley’s oldest and most storied estates. However, Petroski’s real love is Italian wine, and specifically, Italian white wine. In addition making wine at Larkmead, Petroski makes wine under has his own label, Massican, which is dedicated excessively to the great high acid whites he loves, from sun-kissed vineyards in Napa and Sonoma counties. His first vintage, 2009, was immediately picked by the French Laundry, and since that auspicious beginning, the Massican wines have only gotten better: more focused and refined while at the same time always delicious and drinkable. They are unlike any whites we have ever encountered from Napa Valley or Sonoma, in the very best ways.

At Massican, Petroski focuses on grapes like Tocai Fruilano, Ribolla Gialla, as well as this fantastic varietal Sauvignon Blanc. Fermented and aged in 75% stainless steel barrels, the 2019 vintage opens with Sancerre-like racy acidity and a fine beam of minerals. It expands on the palate with a juicy core of apple and citrus fruit, and the mouthwatering finish begs for a second sip. If you love Sancerre and the great high-acid whites of the world, (or if you're simply craving a refreshing white to beat the heat), this is a no-brainer. We could go on, but the wine speaks for itself. From two vineyard sites in Napa and fermented and aged in 75% stainless steel barrels, this Sauvignon Blanc opens with Sancerre-like racy acidity and a fine beam of minerals. From the winery: "Inspired by the Sauvignon wines of northern Italy, our Sauvignon Blanc pays homage to the tart and delicious every day wine workhorse of the region of Friuli. While it is difficult to recreate these specific Italian wines anywhere else in the world, Sauvignon is our California interpretation of these great Italian white wines. The grapes for this wine are farmed at two vineyards in Napa Valley where the temperatures are both the warmest during the day and the coolest at night. That diversity helps us produce a wine of intensity and freshness, and as such we tip-our-Sauvignon-hat to our fellow winemakers in northeast Italy."

About: Massican is named after Monte Massico (the Massican hills), the coastal mountain range in southern Italy where their founders are from. In California they cultivate six white wine grape varieties in and around Napa Valley and Sonoma County. From these California grapes they make four distinct wines, each channeling the Italian style of refreshing Mediterranean white wines.

Four of the grape varieties trace their origins to Italy – Tocai Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Pinot Bianco and Greco. Two of the grape varieties, although no strangers to Italy, are more widely known throughout the world – Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
