2017 LIQUID FARM "GOLDEN SLOPE" SANTA RITA HILLS CHARDONNAY, CALIFORNIA. 100% Chardonnay.
"Golden Slope" is the English translation of Burgundy's famous "Cote d'Or", where Chardonnay is king and which is the stylistic inspiration for this wine each vintage. They work with fruit from top sites in the appellation, including including Bentrock, Rita’s Crown, La Rinconada and others to craft a Chardonnay that has ripe fruit, lushness and texture with natural acidity keeping everything in check. Aging in primarily neutral oak (15% new) allows for the development of weight and body without interfering in the expression of fruit and terroir. Always a bit more generous than it's sister Chardonnay, 'White Hill", we like to think of this as California's answer Meursault, and 2014 quite very well be this wine's best vintage ever. A must-try for any Chardonnay lover.
About:Passionate Burgundy fans and lovers of mineral-driven, high acid wines that show a sense of place, Liquid Farm founders Nikki and Jeff Nelson bucked the trend of overripe, over-oaked wines sought to make wines in the style they preferred to drink. Thus was born Liquid Farm, a boutique producer of old world-inspired wines with a focus on Chardonnay from California's Sta. Rita Hills, where the mineral-rich, ancient terroir and cool climate are perfect conditions for growing Chardonnay with the potential to make structured, elegant wines.
To do this, the Nelsons selfishly decided to make what they most love to drink: Chardonnay that is earth and mineral driven from cool climates with little or no new oak. To achieve these qualities we were drawn to one of the coolest of all California AVA’s, Sta. Rita Hills. Located in Santa Barbara County, it is home to some of the most Chardonnay-suited, unique, ancient soils in North America.
Often said, but very true, all great wine starts in the vineyard. The name Liquid Farm reflects the owners’ strong belief in that philosophy. It is truly all about place in combination with the highest quality fruit and letting the varietal and regional TYPICITY of the wine shine through from vineyard to glass…Liquid from Farming.
The Nelsons allow the wines to develop on their own with little intervention, minimal or no new oak and use no additives or machines to manipulate the wines inherent personality. The project is also committed to blending from the handful of special vineyards they work with in the small AVA of Sta. Rita Hills to produce a collection of Chardonnays that are markedly different expressions, but with the same thread of intense minerality and salinity they started with in the vineyard. (Winery)
