Located in Yumbel in the Bio Bio Valley of Southern Chile, Manuel Humberto Moraga Gutiérrez is organically farming vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Corinto, Malbec, Moscatel de Alejandría, Torontel, and the varietal used in this distinctive Chilean red wine, Pais. Chile's oldest and most important vitis vinifera grape varietal (originally brought to the Americas by the Spanish con quistadors) Pais yields a light-bodied, Gamay-like red wine with a brambly, rustic quality -- think, Beaujoalis of Chile -- with freshness and likeability that makes it easy to drink with food. The name "Pipeno" references a traditional method of Chilean winemaking that also dates back to the late 16th century, with a very short fermentation and aging processes to produce youthful wines for immeidate consumptio. Often packaged in a liter bottle like this wine, "Pipeno" is a wine of the people for the people, great for picnics, barbecues, parties, camping, you name it.

The Pais grape has played a major role in the Chilean wine industry. It is believed to have been brought to the region by Spanish conquistadors from Peru during their colonization of the South American continent in the 16th century. The reigning theory is that the Pais grape descended from the Spanish "common black grape" brought to Mexico in 1520 by conquistador Hernán Cortés. It was cultivated by Spanish missionaries and spread throughout the Americas. Pais remained Chile's most planted variety until it was recently surpassed by Cabernet Sauvignon in the 21st century.
