2016 BYRON BLATTY "GHOST CAT" LOS ANGELES COUNTY RED BLEND
2016 BYRON BLATTY "GHOST CAT" LOS ANGELES COUNTY RED BLEND, CALIFORNIA. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc.
The 2016 Ghost Cat is a wine with a purpose. Donning Steve Winter's iconic image of P-22, this Bordeaux inspired blend pays homage to LA's big cat population, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to SaveLACougars.org for their planned wildlife crossing over the 101 freeway.
The 2016 Ghost Cat is a blend of 66% Syrah, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. While Syrah represents the varietal with the highest percentage of the blend, the remaining 34% is all Bordelaise, leaning the wine to that style. This is a single vineyard wine from the Smith Family Vineyard in Antelope Valley. Each varietal was vinified and aged separately, then blended several months ahead of bottling. The wines were pressed into neutral oak barrels after fermentation, then was racked off the lees into a selection of new oak barrels the following spring. The wine spent a total 32 months in French oak, 85% new. 110 cases produced.
Candied walnuts, cherry cola, and liquorish dominate the nose, supported by cedar, worn leather, and sagebrush. The sip delivers fresh black raspberries and more dark cherries, with waves of bright acidity that follow the fruit, and linger on the nuanced finish.
About: Mark Blatty and his wife Jenny founded Byron Blatty Wines in 2014, after a visit to Napa Valley. Inspired by the story of Napa’s original vintners, who challenged the French with their determination to create world-class wines in a previously unproven region, the Blattys had only one rule that would guide them on their endeavor to start a commercial winery: The wines had to be from their hometown of Los Angeles. Initially they intended to plant a small vineyard on their hillside property, but soon realized that the space was not large enough, nor was it right for the varietals they had in mind. Undeterred, they began to search for vineyards in LA County from which to source their grapes. Despite the area's rich wine history, established vineyards in LA are few and far between, and it took the couple nearly a year to discover just the right sites, tucked away in the far corners of the county.
Byron Blatty Wines focuses on limited-edition, handcrafted red wines that feature small family-owned vineyards in Los Angeles County. All of the fruit is handpicked, fermented in small open-top bins, and aged in a mixture of new and neutral French oak barrels for 18 - 30 months. The result is a selection of powerful wines with bold flavors that showcase the best of what LA has to offer. If terroir is a sense of place and the expression of its character, Los Angeles has never been expressed this way before. (Producer)
