2014 ARZUAGA "PAGO FLORENTINO" CASTILLA-LA MANCHA
In Spain, a “pago” is a special place or terroir that possesses qualities which distinguish it from the surrounding region. Produced by Arzuaga Navarro, this is 100% Tempranillo from La Mancha, land of Don Quixote, where the grape is known locally as "Cencibel". The vineyard is located in the town of Malagón at the foot of a hill where it is protected by a mountain range to the north with and faced south towards two natural lagoons, in a microclimate well-suited to the Tempranillo grape. A rocky top-soil covers clay and slate for a nice balance of water drainage and retention for optimum ripeness. Aged in a combination of French and American oak, is rich in blackberries and plums on the nose, intensified by notes of cassis, currant, and dark chocolate on the palate. Full-bodied and plush with notes of toasty oak on the finish, many who have given this crowd-pleaser a try have come back for a case. It complements many foods, from charcuterie and cheeses to roast meats and game, and even pairs with chocolate!
