BARNAUT "GRAND RESERVE" GRAND CRU BRUT CHAMPAGNE

BARNAUT "GRAND RESERVE" GRAND CRU BRUT CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE. Barnaut is one of the oldest grower-producers in Champagne. Based in Bouzy, this small-estate producer specializes in Pinot Noir-based Champagne. Edmond Barnaut was one of the first to base his brand outside of Reims and Epernay. He set up shop in Bouzy in 1874. Cellars were dug 15 meters underground and five generations of Barnaut descendants have maintained the quality of the house.

Power and richness are the hallmarks of this wine from Barnaut, whose vineyards are in Bouzy. With its high Pinot Noir element, there is acidity as well, but yeast and almonds also show through, yielding a well-balanced wine. Today Champagne Barnaut farms 11.27 hectares (28 acres) divided among 32 parcels in the grand cru vineyards of Bouzy, Ambonnay and Louvois. The latter two communes are adjacent to Bouzy and Barnaut’s holdings in them represent 5% of the domain’s grand cru totals. In addition, the domain farms 4.6 hectares (11 acres) in the Marne Valley and sells those grapes to the cooperative that makes the Nicolas Feuillatte brand, while saving some Chardonnay to make a Blanc de Blancs.
