2019 HALCYON CABERNET FRANC
2018 HALCYON CABERNET FRANC, CALIFORNIA. 100% Cabernet Franc.
Named after the Greek myth of Halcyone and Ceyx—a story that tells of a mythical bird that made a floating nest on the Aegean sea and was believed to have the power to calm waves after the winter solstice—a time referred to as “Halcyon days” (there’s more to the story but you’ll have to look it up)—Halcyon Wines was founded by Tyler and Kim Elwell in 2014. Both native Californians, the Elwells bring a deep-rooted love of wine and California in this new winemaking project, focused entirely on Cabernet Franc. Tyler, a veteran California winemaker, had always dreamed of making Cabernet Franc in styles similar to those he and Kim love from the Loire Valley, so when he discovered a cool-climate Cabernet Franc vineyard in Paso Robles, the “Halcyon days” began. Based in Napa Valley but working with a handful of organic and sustainably farmed vineyards in the Central Coast and Northern California, Halcyon brings a refreshing twist to California Cabernet Franc, making some of the most exciting offerings on the market today.
About: Santa Barbara-bred Tyler and Napa Valley-native Kim launched Halcyon Wines in 2014 when Tyler discovered cooler climate Cabernet Franc in the Templeton Gap—a varietal he always dreamed of working with. In his 15 years of winemaking experience, Tyler climbed his way up the cellar ladder (and the California coast), as a cellar rat in Santa Barbara to Assistant Winemaker at Paso Robles’ prestigious Tablas Creek, to most recently earning an Executive MBA in Wine Business from Sonoma State University. Tyler currently works for Jackson Family Wines as a brand manager for some of Napa Valley’s most iconic brands.
Kim Elwell is a PR and marketing expert with a decade+ of experience serving celebrity, hospitality, and food/wine clients throughout the Bay Area and beyond—most notably managing Bob Weir's (Grateful Dead) recording studio, TRI Studios in Marin, California. Kim works full-time as Account Director for The James Collective, a boutique PR and marketing agency based in wine country and New York City.
Together the Elwells combine their deep-rooted love of wine and California, bringing you a nouveau take on California Cabernet Franc.
