2017 TWO SHEPHERDS "BECHTHOLD VINEYARD" LODI CINSAULT
This small lot of ancient vine Cinsault, from the famed Bechthold Vineyard is believed to be the oldest surviving Cinsault Vineyard in the world. Dry farmed and head trained in sandy soils, these old vines provide low yield, and a more complex expression of Cinsault. The grapes were whole cluster fermented with native yeast, then aged in old French oak barrels for 9 months. The result is a fragrant, red-fruited wine with bright acidity and a nice juicy backbone that pairs with many foods. About: William Allen began making wine in his garage, inspired by Rhone varietals and blends. Over the years, be conitnue to expand and experiment with making small lots from unique vineyard sites throughout Northern California, until eventually earning the nickname, 'insane master of small lots'. While Two Shepherd's total production is small (~2,000 cases per year) they produce a wide range of wines - about 15 different wines each vintage. All the wines are fermented with native yeast, aged on the lees in neutral barrels, minimally racked with no fining, filtration, or additions other than a small amount of sulfur. They focus on uncommon varietals, cool climate or old vine plantings, often from the only few acres in California.
