2017 SER "WIRZ VINEYARD" CIENEGA VALLEY DRY RIESLING

2017 SER "WIRZ VINEYARD" CIENEGA VALLEY DRY RIESLING, CALIFORNIA. 100% Riesling. (Organic)

The Wirz Vineyard is located in the Cienega Valley at the northern end of the Gabilan Mountain range (1000 ft elevation) with soils of decomposed granite and limestone. The San Andreas fault runs through the property, so it literally sits on the intersection of two tectonic plates. The terroir consists of very deep sandy loam and clay loam (limestone) with large granite and limestone pebbles - very rocky, poor soil. This forces the roots to grow deep in search of water and minerals.

The vines are approximately 70 years old, head trained, dry farmed. Gentle, whole cluster pressing followed by a cool fermentation maintains this varietal's naturally fresh aromatics. The wine fermented with indigenous yeast in stainless steel and displays nectarine, peach and green apple aromas and flavors with hints of lime. Crisp, dry and refreshing, with balanced acidity and elegant mineral tones.

Made by grower-winemaker-surfer Nicole Walsh, project manager for Randall Graham of Bonny Doon’s 400 acre Popelouchum project and who makes wine with minimal intervention under her own label, Ser, based in Santa Cruz. Nicole is committed to preserving the unique character of varieties and sources in her wine and selecting interesting vineyards with special soils and microclimates.
