2016 VINA ILUSION "PRANA" RIOJA, SPAIN. 100% Tempranillo.

This juicy Rioja is quite unique in that is is produced with spontaneous fermentation and carbonic maceration, a technique more common in Beaujolais than Rioja, where wines are traditionally made with fermentation followed by aging in barrel (often American oak) as well as bottle. The result is a fresh, fruit-driven red that sings of just picked strawberries and cherries. Produced free of any chemicals or additives, it is uncomplicated and delicious, nothing more than the result of nature's channeling of the energy of sun and earth through the vine to your glass. Hence the name, Prana.
Martin A Alonso Etayo and his family began farming their plot of land in the valley of Cidacos, in La Rioja in 1992. he land is in ecological cultivation since its acquisition. Their viticultural methods are guided by the teachins of Fukuoka (which they went to visit and meet in Japan) permaculture, Jean-Marie Roger and Rudolf Steiner (founder of Biodynamics) as well as the wisdom passed down by generations of their ancestors. Their vineyard is located on slightly elevated land between 600-700 m altitude. Due to the influences of the Ebro Valley and the microclimate of this part of the Cidacos Valley, it is possible to grow Mediterranean plants such as the olive tree, the almond tree, and the vine for a biodiverse ecosystem. Their vineyard is planted to 75% tempranillo, 10% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 10% Graciano, and 5% Garnacho. All harvesting is done by hand.
The result is a more fruity wine, lighter in the mouth.
