2018 ST REY (HAARMEYER WINE CELLARS) "SRV" CLARKSBURG CHENIN BLANC, CALIFORNIA. 100% Chenin Blanc.
An exciting new discovery for us, Haarmeyer Wine Cellars is a father and son winemaking duo based in Sacramento. They specialize in historically grown varieties and newer plantings, in particular Chenin Blanc from marine-influenced river delta that they vinify in still and sparkling Pet Nat variations, both which we sell. This comes from younger vines planted to the sand and clay soils of the Sutter Ranch Vineyard, located deep in the Clarksburg AVA where the marine breezes preserve high natural acidity for a very refreshing dry wine that retains all of the varietal characteristics of Chenin Blanc. This 100% Chenin was foot-tread, fermented spontaneously with partial malo-lactic. It is zippy and fresh with lemony citrus, green herb and chalky mineral aromas and flavors. Subtle creamy notes on the palate made for a refreshing, well-balanced wine perfect for enjoying with a range of foods, oysters and seafood especially.
About: "Haarmeyer Wine Cellars is a family team, started in 2008 by sourcing fruit from a vineyard farmed by Ron Silva just down the road in the little town of Galt, California. At the time they were interested primarily in making port and other wines using Spanish and Portuguese varieties, mainly because of the dry climate and the proximity of this vineyard to Sacramento. The place seemed right for the numerous varieties of Iberian grapes Ron was farming. This lead them to consider other sites and as things expandedthey evolved to trying to define and express terroir. Soon they began using the phrase "Sacramento terroir" to describe the purpose of St. Rey. To quote: "This area of thought and practice is a clearing in the forest; a clearing in the industrial winemaking jungle where we cultivate Sacramento Terroir. I hope the wines stimulate your imagination as well. Cheers!"
