2016 QUARTICELLO DI ROBERTO MAETRI "DESPINA" SPARKLING MALVASIA EMILIA, EMILIA ROMAGNA, ITALY. 100% Malvasia. (Organic/Biodynamic)

Made using an aromatic clone of Malvasia, Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, with spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel. Recent DNA studies have proven that Malvasia di Candia Aromatica is not a mutation of Malvasia Bianca di Candia but a distinct variety, believed to have originated on the Greek island Crete. The gravelly sand-clay soils of Roberto Maestri's vineyards in Montecchio Emilia are farmed without use of chemicals, using only organic fertilizers and following many Biodynamic principles. He farms only indigenous varietals and follows traditional, natural winemaking techniques. Fermentation happens in the bottle with only native yeasts allowing the spirit of the wine to come through. Bottled unfined and unfiltered and very low in sulfite, this displays appealing aromas of citrus peel, stone fruits and flowering herbs with an earthy, yeasty note. Crisp, lightly frizzante and refreshing, this is pleasantly dry on the palate. A terrific aperitif wine that is excellent with appetizers and tapas.

About: The Quarticello farm is located in Montecchio Emilia near the river Enza at the foot of the Emilian-Tuscany Appennines. They make expressive wines from native grapes like Lambrusco and Malvasia di Candia, minimizing use of sulfur dioxide and all actions that can somehow change the expression of the characteristics of native varieties bred in the heart of the territories of origin.
