2017 OENO SONOMA COUNTY CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Good California Cab under $20 is hard to find these days, especially varietally correct Cab that tastes in balance, without excessive influences of oak, overripe flavors, or high alcohol. If you've been on a hunt for well-balanced CA Cab, you will be excited to discover Oeno, a stellar Cabernet value from Sonoma. In accordance with importer/producer Amy Atwood's strict standards for production, this comes from head-trained 40 year-old vines planted to a single vineyard. It was 100% de-stemmed, 100% whole berry pressed and fermented with native yeast, followed by aging in neutral French Oak to preserve the varietal fruit character. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, this Cabernet Sauvignon shows ripe blackberry and cocoa flavors accented by pepper and spice. On the palate, a velvety mouthfeel and full body first expand and then refine, finishing long with ripe, smooth tannins. It's a lip-smacking throwback to the "good old days" of California Cab, when it tasted more like wine than oak, alcohol levels were in the realm of reasonable, and you could afford to buy more than one bottle with your hard-earned paycheck.
About the Producer: Wine importer and distributor Amy Atwood had been on a quest for some time for a good California Cab that fit her "Old World" criteria (perfect fruit, native yeast ferment, zero new oak, moderate alcohol, etc.) for her portfolio, Amy Atwood Selections. Not finding any existing in California to suit her standards, she decided to make it herself. Working in collaboration with top California growers and winemakers who share a minimal intervention philosphy, Oeno was born. "Oeno" is the ancient Greek for wine and the name of a Greek goddess known for turning water into wine.
