2016 MORIC "HAUS MARKE" ROT BLAUFRANKISCH BLEND BURGUNLAND

2016 MORIC HAUS MARKE ROT BURGUNLAND, AUSTRIA. Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt and Pinot Noir.

Moric is the winery that put the Austrian red grape Blaufrankisch--and by extension, Austrian red wine in general--on the map. An entry-level counter-part to his more serious reds, winemaker Roland Velich recently began producing this fresh and lively blend of Blaufrankisch, Pinot Noir and Zweigelt (a cross of Blaufrankisch and another native Austrian variety, St Laurent). With bright red fruit, chalky minerals and subtle spice, its a stylish yet accessible alternative Pinot for light appetizers and salads, herbed chicken, pasta with tomato-based sauces and fish.

From the Winery: Zweigelt provides the largest share to this all-together Austrian cuvée, but the wine's character is dominated by Blaufrankisch. Maybe that's easier to understand when you consider that Zweigelt is itself a crossing of Blaufrankisch and another autochthonous Austrian variety (St Laurent). So with this much Blaufrankisch in its blood, but also coming from this producer, it can't surprise that the Hausmarke Rot comes across as a Blaufrankisch with a more playful side, one that lends freshness and agility to this still serious red. A wine for every day, including a grand occasion. (Importer)
